Hi Guys,
Well the Oct Fly-In did take place. However, because the coast was
IFR, and even a bit inland at Riverside, we elected to fly to a severe
clear area... Borrego in the desert.
In addition, the Temporary Flight Restrictions and other uncertainties
didn't make pilots feel very confortable. So only three planes and seven
people made it. Gary Ghio, Gary Kauffmann and Wesley in an Arrow from
CRQ, Mike Gretton and Andy Silver in a 172 from MYF, and Jim Newport and
me in a 172 from MYF.
At both airports weather was around 3 mile vis and 900 foot ceiling so
everyone had to file and depart IFR and meet up in Borrego. Once East of
El Cajon and Ramona the weather went severe clear and it was a nice hop.
At Borrego, a van from Casa De Zorro a van and took us to their very
nice restaurant which had excellent service and food. After a bit of
"hangar flying" over breakfast it was an uneventful flight back to
San
Diego, which pretty much had cleared up when we returned.
It was short hop, but a fun, Sunday breakfast flight with friends,
which is what a relaxing Fly-In is all about anyway. I'm ready to do it
again.
NEXT FLY-IN... SUN, NOV 18th... BRACKETT FIELD (called La Verne) in
Pomona. Pretty decent food their and I thought the food was okay. If
the weather is crappy, then we'll head for better weather. The alternate
will be to the desert again... Calexico Airport which has the restaurant
with good Mexican food but horrible service. Get a plane scheduled up.
In a another week or two, I believe the Feds will lift the TFRs in
more areas, including San Diego, and allow VFR flying in Bravo Airspace.
Let's hope so.
