Hello Everyone,
Eight people in four planes made the Big Bear Fly-In on Sun, Aug 16th.
Flying out of Gillespie were Gary Kauffman & Gary Ghio in a 177RG, and in a
C-337 were Robert Werve, Don MacManus and Bob Ridout.
Dennis Cullum flew out of in a RV3.
Flying out of Montgomery were Jim Newport and Tony Tex in a C-337.
San Diego had some broken to scattered stuff with bottoms at 1800' and tops
at 2800', but above that it was clear and 10-15 miles vis.
By the time we got to Big Bear it was CAVU. The weather was perfect there. A
cool 68 with a little breeze.
As usual, Werve got there first and got a table for twelve. But two planes
and four other people didn't show up. We did a lot of hangar flying over
breakfast at Thelma's and Dennis took some pictures. He'll send the pics to
Chris Claborne for our website.
At breakfast we initially agreed to go to Apple Valley for the Sept 20th
Fly-In. However, later a couple people said the temps there may still be a
little "toasty". So I looked up the average temps for APV and they range
from 70 at night to 92 during the day. So, we'll save Apple Valley for a
cooler month and instead go to the 2nd airport we talked about... SANTA
PAULA (SZP). That'll be on Sept 20th.
Coming back from Big Bear, the LA Basin and down to San Diego it was pretty
fuzzy because of the wind blowing the smoke down from the fires further
north. It was about 6 miles vis and nothing to write home about.
Overall it was another fun Fly-In. Hope to see more of you for the Sept
Fly-In.
Best of clear skies and tailwinds,
Tony Tex
